SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is primarily used for data protection such as client’s name, last name, address and maybe the most important of all – credit card safety.
What is HTTPS?
Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a type of protocol used for safe computer communication and it’s widely spread all over the Internet. Technically speaking, it is not the protocol itself but sets in as the result of putting Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) on SSL/TLS protocol, the process which adds safety possibilities of SSL / TLS to standard HTTP communications.
Why do I need SSL certificate?
SSL (Secure Socket Layer) is primarily used for data protection such as client’s name, last name, address and maybe the most important of all – credit card safety.
When is it necessary to own SSL certificate?
We use SSL certificate when there is a confidential data transfer such as credit card numbers, safety credentials and similar features. If you are a new web page owner or run a blog without any confidential information, you won’t be needing SSL certificate, unless that is what you wish for.
SSL certificate benefits:
- Authenticity – users are guaranteed that they are visiting an authentic web page; not the website which is the imitation of the real one
- Search engine ranking – Google ranks better web pages that are safe, and SSL certificate can confirm that
- PCI standards – if you want to have a card payment option available on your page, you have to follow PCI (Payment Card Industry) standards. One of the requirements needed is SSL
- Clients’ trust – potential buyer would probably always decide to purchase a certain product or service only if there is the feeling of safety when visiting the web page.
